Vase of dahlias in Kristen's art studio

Cut Flower Care

A guide to maximize the vase life and enjoyment of your flowers.

  • Cut each stem at a 45 degree angle ~1 inch or more from the bottom of the stem before placing into fresh, cool water.

  • Change the water daily (or if you get busy like me, as often as you can remember, but at least once it starts getting low and/or cloudy).

  • Use half of the pack of flower food included with your bouquet when you first bring the flowers home, and save the rest for your next water change.

  • As flowers fizzle out, remove them and fluff your arrangement to keep it looking happy.

  • You can expect that your dahlias may have the shortest vase life of the varieties I grow.  The one down side to how beautiful they are... The ball varieties will last the longest though, something to keep in mind as you pick your bouquets if you value vase life over uniqueness of the different blooms.
